Top 10 in-demand skills

Electric Vehicles are becoming more popular as people become more concerned about the environment. Not only that, but with emerging technology, people are gradually adopting the use of Electric Vehicles (EVs), from bikes to cars to heavy vehicles. New job opportunities are being created as the industry is developing and growing at a rapid pace. So, you see, there is a need for new skills as well as the necessity to upskill employees when they shift from old to new technology.

Read on if you’re interested in pursuing a career in the EV industry.

According to data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, there are 13 lakh Electric Vehicles (EVs) on Indian roads as of August 3rd, 2022. This number will soon double, and EVs will be commonplace on the roads. This could be the future of the automotive ecosystem.

The need for a skilled workforce in the EV industry

You need to learn new skills and get trained in different job roles if you are interested in making a career in the Electric Vehicle (EV) industry.

Along with an increase in the number of people adopting Electric Vehicles (EVs) and the growth of the EV industry, new job roles are emerging. So, can you imagine how many jobs will be created in this industry? So, for this, there will be a need to adopt new skills in the EV industry. Additionally, if you are employed in the automotive industry and interested in shifting to the EV industry, you must upskill yourselves.

Let’s explore more about the jobs and skills that are in demand in the EV industry.

Top 10 in-demand skills and job roles in the Electric Vehicle (EV) industry

You will need to acquire new skills and qualifications if you are currently employed or seeking a job in the automotive industry. There will be many service centres in need of skilled people like you who can enter these job roles. This means the EV ecosystem needs advanced technology and a highly skilled workforce.

Top 10 in-demand skills

Must-have skills in the Electric Vehicle (EV) industry

In the next few years, various jobs are going to be in great demand. For that, you need demand-driven skills, and these are the skills the industry will be looking for. These skills include technical and non-technical skills.

  • Thorough understanding of prototypes: hardware design, software development, EMC compliance, and functional testing
  • Embedded product development: in-vehicle and outside-vehicle deployment of various data networking protocols
  • Develop skills in multidisciplinary technology design
  • Communication skills
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Analytical skills and creative skills
  • Electrical power line installation and maintenance
  • Equipment testing
  • Technicians (switches, transmitters, and light fixtures)
  • General maintenance

In-demand job roles in the EV industry

According to an IVCA-EY-Induslaw report, EV sales in India are predicted to exceed 9 million units by 2027, with the industry providing more than 10 million direct and 50 million indirect jobs by 2030. Here are the top 10 job roles in the industry.

  • Electricians for charging stations
  • Testing and EV manufacturing
  • Sales and service executives
  • Infrastructure development
  • Mechanics and Technicians
  • Electric Vehicle Designer
  • Battery management (Artificial intelligence)
  • App Developer
  • Data Analyst

Addressing the shortage of Batteries and Charging stations

Switching to Electric Vehicles (EVs), the government of India provides an upfront subsidy that reduces the overall costs of Electric Vehicles. The e-AMRIT portal, managed by the government of India, offers various resources to help ease the migration to EVs. Here, the portal offers from choosing an Electric Vehicle (EV) to comparing the cost of an EV and an ICE vehicle.

But there has been a significant shortage of lithium batteries in India. There is also a scarcity of public charging stations. A Grant Thornton Bharat FCII survey estimated that “India would require four lakh charging stations by 2026, compared to the 2,900 now available.” As we gradually transition from ICE vehicles to Electric Vehicles, the automotive industry is also changing, so you need to change. So, there is a need to enhance the skills required to bring change and address the demand in the industry.

Future road map for the EV industry

Growing interest in Electric Vehicles (EVs) has been attributed to the growth of environmental concerns and the emergence of new technology. Since EV requires electric-drive components, fuel expenses can be reduced. The adoption of EVs is anticipated to rise as the automotive industry prepares to introduce its Electric Vehicle models in India. The government is also making efforts to develop an atmosphere that would support a robust e-mobility ecosystem in India.

The times are exciting to develop a career in this industry, so you need to get yourself skilled and upskilled by choosing the right training program that suits you. There are a lot of opportunities coming up. You can enrol in a skilling or education program and learn new skills to explore these fascinating job opportunities.
