The skill space in India is getting busier by the day with several initiatives and MoUs for training in various industry sectors. As we await the news about impact of these initiatives, another news made headlines and it has a direct relationship with our pursuits in skill development. According to a report from Montreal-based UNESCO Institute for Statistics and Global Education Monitoring, India has 47 million secondary and higher secondary dropouts. Here’s updating you with the next edition of skill development news digest 010916.

  • Andhra Pradesh: Amara Raja skill development centre celebrates its first convocation with 101 successful candidates.
  • Assam: Assam police have creates skill development centres across the Bodoland territory for training youth in various skills.
  • Delhi: 1. MoU was signed between MSDE, CRPF and Ministry of Home Affairs for imparting training programs through CRPF Multi-Skill Development Institutes. 2. IndiaMART ties up with APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University to boost skill development and hire management and technology graduates. 3. ÇELEBI Delhi Cargo Terminal Management India Pvt. Ltd. in association with NIV Art & Cultural Society initiated a vocational training program in Doll Making from scrap and waste material for underprivileged women. 4. Army wives and wards will now be provided training in areas like IT, beauty and wellness, apparel and handicraft at an Army Skill Training Centre.
  • Jammu and Kashmir: 1. Around 1 lakh youth, mostly under-graduates, will be given job oriented training under “Himayat” scheme in next 5 years 2. The government aims to remodel the education system in 132 schools with vocational subjects and promote entrepreneurship.
  • Jharkhand: Proposal to set up Kalyan Gurukuls through PAN-IIT Alumni Research For India (PARFI) by setting up multi-trade skill development centers to train 1500 youth in 7 districts.
  • Karnataka: Government has decided to upgrade the quality of training imparted in the ITIs, candidates certified under NOS, are eligible for an admission into any higher educational institution.
  • Maharashtra: 1. Government signed a pact with Tata Group’s hospitality branch to set up a skill-training facility at the ITI to train rural students in hospitality skills 2. CDEP skill institute partners with “World Vision India” to provide soft skill training to underprivileged children. 3. AcadGild and IL&FS Skills collaborate to train 2 lakh students in technology and business skills through courses like Android Developer, Big Data & Digital Marketing.
  • Odisha: Government signs MoU with Wadhwani Foundation for offering vocational training in 208 schools in the first phase.
  • Punjab: 1. The Sikh NGO conducted a skill development workshop for garment manufacturing for empowering women with entrepreneurship skills. 2. Chamber of Industrial Commercial Undertakings (CICU) distributes employability certificates to 100 students
  • Rajasthan:1. The Government signs an MoU with RISE INDIA to provide skill training in prominent sectors such as agriculture, horticulture, and animal husbandry. 2. Cairn India has received the best CSR award for its work in economically backward regions and fro transforming lives of people in communities of Andhra Pradesh.
  • Tamil Nadu: Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) has signed an MoU with PSG Polytechnic to offer vocational diploma programme in the automobile sector at level 5 of NSQF as per AICTE curriculum.
  • Telangana:   1.Oracle Academy and Telangana Academy for Skill and Knowledge (TASK) partner to introduce Oracle Academy curriculum into 150 engineering colleges which include software, curriculum, hosted technology, educator training, support and certification resources .The initiative is expected to help 2,000 students and 150 faculty members over the next three years. 2. The state of Telangana and Malaysian government are to work closely on skill development and adopt models of development.
  • West Bengal: 1. The Paschim Banga Society for Skill Development (PBSSD)is taking various steps to promote skill development through uniformity in curricula, infrastructure and certification. 2. National Institute of Biologicals offered training to pharmacy students to create awareness of the global scenario of biological testing and its prospects.

News from the industry sectors

  • Beauty and Wellness: Jawed Habib hair stylists to train 10,000 youth each year along with a training upgrade to practising barbers to keep them up to date with the latest trends of fashion.
  • Oil industry: Project “Swabalamban” is a Corporate Social Responsibility project of Oil India Ltd (OIL), under which it is conducting various projects and schemes for welfare of society.
  • Tourism : Thomas Cook Centre of Learning signs MoU with MP Tourism to impart training programmes – ‘Explore Madhya Pradesh’ via engaging learning modules to over 660 travel agents, covering 20 cities.
  • Health care: The new initiative will focus on mass training programmes .for small and petty food businesses like street food vendors, fruits and vegetable vendors and others in partnership with Skill India and corporate partnership.

News from the central government

  • Seeking help of the BRICS countries, the government aims to adopt skill development models and work towards the successful implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • India and Germany signed an agreement that aims to foster conditions that will help create and improve workplace-based vocational training in India’s industrial clusters.
  • Germany has pledged Rs 22.6 crore to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship Skill India programme to enhance industry institute partnerships between the two countries.
  • The Ministry of Skill development plans to inaugurate parks for the training of it is with latest equipment.
  • B.Voc students can now appear for competitive exams like any other students without any entry requirement or specific qualifications.
