• More than 7.36 lakh candidates received training under PMKVY 3.0 during the course of the past year and 1.20 lakh candidates received training under the Customized Crash Course program for Covid warriors.
• A Digital India Innovation Fund will be established by the government to support deep tech startups.
• To increase India’s domestic capacity and create opportunities in the AVGC-XR sector, the Center released draft policies for national and state level, talks about the framing of a new curriculum at school and college levels.
• To track the progress of skill-building programs and fine-tune the nation’s skills policy for both the country and industries, MSDE is considering developing a skills development index.
• Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship’s Year-End Review for 2022 on PMKVY, Skill Hubs, Digital Skilling, Launch of New Employability Skills Curriculum and more.

• From Red Hat to AWS, global software companies and OEMs are joining the government’s vocational skilling framework to ‘credit’ their courses, that are utilized by people to upskill in a fast-digitalizing world.
• Through its Supply Chain Operations Academy, Flipkart is boosting up its efforts to provide industry-relevant training and skilling opportunities.
• As part of its CSR initiative, Electrosteel Castings Limited (ECL) has launched a skill-development training program for women living in the villages of Srikalahasthi in the Tirupati district of Andhra Pradesh.
• An Indian Millet Park has been proposed to be established as part of this initiative in Zimbabwe, Africa announced by Indian Economic Trade Organization (IETO).
• The Skill Verification Program was introduced in India by NSDC and TakaMol Holding, Saudi Arabia, aims to verify that Indian professionals have the qualifications and skills necessary to practise their professions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Skill development news from the ITIs

• Skill, Employment, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha announced that the stipend for ITI students in Maharashtra will be raised from Rs 40 to Rs 500 in the next three months.
• Kanara Industries Association (KIA), Mangaluru held the convocation for the initial batch of apprentices from various ITIs who trained for a year under the Union government’s STRIVE program.
• Students enrolled in ITIs to pursue vocational courses must pass a language exam in order to be eligible for a class XII certificate from the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS).
• In around 14,000 ITIs across all 37 states and UTs in the country, two out of every three faculty positions remain vacant.

Skill development news from the academia

• The new “corrected” Indian history curriculum will be taught in all schools across the country beginning on January 26 as part of NEP 2020.
• For all Indian students pursuing degrees at various universities, autonomous colleges, and institutes of national importance, Rajiv Gandhi University plans to set up an academic bank credit system as part of NEP-2020.
• At the Department of Paper Technology, Saharanpur Campus, IIT Roorkee will launch a new project to develop an Advanced Packaging Research Laboratory and a skill-development program.
• In collaboration with Amazon, the Union Tribal Affairs Ministry launched a two-day program on computational skills for teachers at Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) for tribal students.
• As part of its guidelines for “fostering social responsibility and community engagement in higher education institutions,” UGC has developed a two-credit course.
• The Maharashtra school education department has signed an MoU with TISS to give various B.Voc. courses to 15,000 students from government schools to promote vocational education in line with the new NEP 2020.
• First National Digital University to launch in India, the students will have the choice of obtaining a degree from National Digital University as well as credits from various HEIs.
• The Maharashtra State Skills University (MSSU) will establish its satellite centre in Nashik to provide technical education to students in order to make them employable.
• Symbiosis University of Applied Sciences (SUAS) Indore and Aviral Consulting have inked an MOU to enhance education and skill development in the field of Logistics and Supply Chain.

Skill development news from the States/UTs

• Andhra Pradesh: Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) and CEMS signed an MOU to provide skill development training, and RINL is providing financial support of Rs. 8 lakhs through CER initiative.
• Jammu and Kashmir: In order to provide Kupwara district women with employment opportunities, the Indian Army established a cutting and tailoring centre in the village of Dardpora.
• Karnataka: The Government Tool Room (GTTC) and Training Center launched a multi-skill training center in Hubli with more than 60 courses.
• Maharashtra: To ensure that the children in the orphanages have the skills necessary to obtain jobs in future, Maharashtra government will open skill development centres in each of the state’s orphanages.
• Rajasthan: Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) announced its partnership with Ambuja Foundation (ACF) and AU Foundation for a specialised skill centre at Jai Mahal Palace, Jaipur.

Skill development news from international countries

• Saudi Arabia: At the end of December 2022, MHRSD began the first phase of the Skill Verification Program in India. Written and practical tests for skilled workers will be administered as part of the program.
• South Africa: The Nigerian government is looking into joint investment opportunities with the Indian government to maintain the gains the administration has achieved in promoting TVET and human capacity development, among other areas.
