Skill development news from the government

  • Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship and Education, and Delhi L-G V.K. Saxena presented certificates for skill training to 50 trainees during a “Certificate Distribution Ceremony” organized by NDMC.
  • To advance gender equality in skill development, employability, and entrepreneurship, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship signed a partnership agreement with UN Women. Five weeks will be used for the training time.
  • Chief Minister M.K. Stalin stated that universities “must work as per the policy decisions of the State government” and that vice chancellors should act accordingly during a conference organized by the Tamil Nadu government.
  • According to the most recent industry requirements, the Tamil Nadu government has added “employability skills” as a subject in the revised vocational course curriculum in the state-run institutions.
  • The new National Education Policy 2020 (NEP), which was approved by the Union Cabinet of India, addresses all educational levels in rural and urban India, from primary to higher education.
  • Circulars have been sent to Tenkasi, Dindigul, and Kanniyakumari asking district education officers to stop offering vocational courses to Class 11 students in government-run institutions.

Skill development news from the industry

  • The government’s Skill India Mission can have a significant impact on self-employment, but the challenge might be that employees are either unaware of or not persuaded of the advantages of such programs.
  • At Dimapur, a week-long training on a “demand driven skill development program” for youth working in the construction industry was launched by the department of Employment, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (ESD&E) and Zynorique Initiatives Society (ZIS).
  • Experts warn that a lack of trained labour may compel the industry to look for specialists as the Ministry of E&IT considers asking small companies to recruit chief information security officers (CISO) in order to strengthen the cyber-defence system.
  • Seven out of ten people are considering switching jobs or starting a new career path. Simplilearn, an online bootcamp that provides digital skills training, conducted the 2022 State of Upskilling Midyear Learner Survey, which received responses from 750 students.
  • In 100 districts across India, EDII is launching a skill-development and entrepreneurship programme for women-led green enterprises, program’s aim is to provide 10,000 women chance to start a business that will be registered as an MSMEs.
  • As part of their nationwide Employability and Entrepreneurship Initiative Kaushal Sambal, M3M Foundation has partnered with CII and MCM Trust to launch the iMpower Academy for Skills in Dharamshala.
  • A software skill training facility has been established for the district’s rural youth by the Villupuram-based free-software organisation V-GLUG (Villupuram GNU/Linux Users Group), led by a group of techies.
  • National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and the upskilling platform Mythiksha have collaborated to support NSDC’s objective to upskill 1 crore people and place them in rural Indian cities.
  • To train 100 underprivileged students from rural India in skills, the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) has partnered with Dakshana and Ruyintan Mehta to launch a month-long “IITGN-Dakshana Leadership Program.”
  • Adobe and the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) have partnered to advance digital creativity skills throughout the country. Adobe will also provide training and assistance for upgrading educator skills.
  • The One-Year, Full-Time, Self-Financing Panchkarma Technician Course is offered at various Training Centers Affiliated with HSSC and NSDC and is supported by the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India.
  • Since 2017, Amazon Web Services (AWS) says to have taught more than 20 lakh people to close the skills gap in India’s cloud industry. To keep up with the pace of change, India needs a robust digital workforce and tech experts with current and relevant digital skills.

  •  An MoU between Government Industrial Training Institute (ITI), Koira and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has been signed to provide dual system training for operators of stone processing machines.
  • The first vocational training institution in the district, ITI Ziro in Manipolyang, officially opened in August of this year and offers five trades: electrician, wireman, surveyor, basic cosmetology, and motor mechanic vehicle.
  • UP government launched a drone training programme for instructors at Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) to teach the skill to the youth; the training session is aimed at providing enrolled students superior training.
  • For the academic year 2022–2023, 74,000 seats in government and private Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) in the state have been filled through the three regular admission rounds.
  • The establishment of a new Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) in the Ganjam district’s Polasara received chief minister Naveen Patnaik’s approval. In this district, there are now six government-run industrial training institutions.

Skill development news from academia

  • “Country’s first virtual school” was officially launched by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, and students from all around the nation would be eligible for admission. This will mark a significant development for the education sector.
  • The government will soon implement a National Credit Framework (NCrF) to ensure smooth integration of school, higher, and vocational education. 
  • Top universities from around the world have been encouraged to establish campuses in India, and they would have complete autonomy over the curriculum.
  • Through the centralized grievance platform “e-Samadhan,” the University Grants Commission (UGC) will now resolve all concerns from students, teaching staff, and non-teaching staff.
  • Higher Education & Skills Building Scholarships 2022–23 for Northeast Indian students with disabilities have been launched by Shishu Sarothi, a Guwahati-based organisation working in collaboration with Indus Towers Ltd.
  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) will shortly establish a committee to identify whether academic programmes can be transformed into “degree” courses.
  • C.N. Ashwath Narayan, Minister for IT, BT, S&T, and Higher Education stated that Karnataka has been actively investigating a “path correction” in terms of existing educational frameworks, policies, and curriculum.
  • A cluster will be formed as part of an endeavour by SRM University-AP to expand research in higher education institutions under the DST-SATHI of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
  • HE Dr. Bonginkosi Emmanuel, Minister of Higher Education, Science & Innovation, South Africa, and Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of Education and Skill Development, held a bilateral meeting in Bali to discuss ways to improve academic and skill development collaborations between the two countries.
  • The UGC and the education ministry are finalising the rules for the campuses of foreign universities in India. The idea is to provide students “near full freedom” to choose the content and structure of academic courses.
  • Seattle University has extended its current MOUs with three St. Joseph’s sites and inked two new MOUs with Alliance University and Jindal Global University.
  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) has finalised guidelines for transforming colleges and universities into multidisciplinary institutions and has recommended three distinct options, one of which is “clustering” nearby institutions.
  • Dharmendra Pradhan, the minister of state for education and skill development, claimed that India has operationalized virtual schools and is setting up a digital university as well as educational TV channels.
  • With ADG and UNESCO, Dharmendra Pradhan discussed the Education 2030 agenda and UNESCO’s support for language-based education as well as the next G20 under India’s presidency.

Skill development news from states and UTs

  • Andhra Pradesh: The Indian School of Business’ (ISB) skill-building program will be run by the AP State Skill Development Corporation, and the government has decided to organise special training programs for the students participating.
  • Jammu and Kashmir: The Jammu and Kashmir Vocational Coordinators, who are essential to the effective implementation of vocational education across the Jammu and Kashmir UT, have recently resumed school visits in an effort to enhance the educational system in schools.
  • Nagaland: On September 3, the Town Hall hosted the final demand-driven skill development program for the Dimapur district’s construction industry. 62 Dimapur trainers showed up for the program.
  • Odisha: Under the skill development program of Coal India Ltd., about 450 youths in the Odisha districts of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, and Angul will receive training to become certified electricians, welders, and auto mechanics.
  • Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu government signed an MOU with more than 40 firms as part of its “Naan Mudhalvan” scheme to encourage skill development and employment, Chief Minister M K Stalin launched a special upskilling portal.
  • Uttar Pradesh: The state’s first university for skill development will be built in Varanasi by the government of Uttar Pradesh, the nation’s first state to establish the Skill Development Mission.
