Rajiv Pratap Rudy resignsThe latest development in skill space is that Mr. Rajiv Pratap Rudy has resigned as the Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. Other news that grabbed the headlines included the speculation about NSDC’s new role in implementing skilling schemes from the government. Apart from this, we had many interesting developments in training, vocational education and skilling involving many stakeholders in different states of India. Here’s updating you with the next edition of skill development news digest 010917.

News from the states

Andhra Pradesh: 1. Power Finance Corporation has signed an MoU with AP State Skill Development Corporation (APSSDC) for providing skill development training to the rural youth with a budget of Rs 5 crore. 2. As per media updates, since there is no cooperation either from the private industry or corporate sector, Andhra Pradesh State Skill Development Corporation (APSSDC) has failed to provide employment to the successful skilled youth. Meanwhile, the youth who got jobs are returning homes unable to adjust with meagre salaries at metro cities.

Assam: A day-long workshop on skill development with NSDC, Sector Skill Councils (SSC) and Training Partners was held at Panjabari, Guwahati.

Delhi: 1. DLF Foundation was recognized by Haryana government for its contribution towards Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in skill development. 2. The Hunar Hub or Skill Centre will provide the minority artisans, who have preserved their art and craft for several centuries, a market and make their produce economically viable. 3. Shri Rajnath Singh launches YUVA, a skill development from Delhi Police initiative under PMKVY. More than 2,000 teenagers were selected for training in various skill sets.

Goa: Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) conducted a soft skill training programme for its staff members Paryantan Bhavan, Patto.

Gujarat: CBSE collaborates with Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII), to create a working group for preparing a module on entrepreurship for students and training teachers in the same.

Jammu and Kashmir: 1. The Rajouri district administration has initiated a project to provide education and skill development opportunities to children of ‘safai karamcharis’ working for the local municipality. 2. 42 boys from six skill-development centres of Jammu, run by the district administration in the border blocks, have been selected in the Indian Army. 3. Airports Authority of India, Srinagar had organised a training program on ‘Soft Skill and Grooming’ for the benefit of Airport Staff at Srinagar airport. The training was given by Institute of Hotel Management, Ministry of Tourism. 4. The Bari Brahmana Industrial Association has signed an MoU with Orion Edutech for for skill based training in foods and beverages, banking and finance, retail sales etc in J&K.

Kerala: The Indian Society for Training and Development (ISTD) in association with the IT Communication Technology Kerala Academy to conduct skill development programmes at engineering colleges in the state.

Maharashtra: 1. TimesPro announced its academic collaboration with Jagannath University, Bahadurgarh, to offer a 3 year specialized BBA program in Banking & Finance. 2. GIA (Gemological Institute of America), in collaboration with the Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha (MKSSS), Pune, organised its skill-enhancement training programmes, Applied Jewelry Professional™ (AJP) and SWIFT Jewellery Design, for 51 students.

Manipur: The Department of Higher Education, Government of Manipur has introduced Vocational Training Courses in 40 colleges (29 Government Colleges and 11 Government Aided Colleges).

Meghalaya: The Tura Polytechnic, has inked an agreement with ICT academy, a public-private-partnership initiative of the Central and State governments, to impart employment enhancement training, over 95 students through training on competency-based employability skills.

Nagaland: 1. The School of Engineering & Technology, Nagaland University (SET-NU), Dimapur campus held its inaugural programme of the ‘Employability Enhancement Training Program’. 2. Nagaland Tool Room & Training Centre (NTTC) in association with AICTE & ICT Academy commenced the skill-oriented training programme in IT sector which has been aligned to the Skill India mission.

Odisha: Akanksha, the CSR arm of Infosys Bhubaneswar Development Centre, in collaboration with the Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET), recently conducted a free residential operator training program for 240 students.

Punjab: Apparel Training & Design Centre (ATDC) has signed an agreement with Groz Beckert Asia to launch the CSR initiative for vocational training at ATDC Chandigarh.

Rajasthan: The Rajasthan government signed a joint venture agreement with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) for the upcoming mega petroleum refinery in Barmer.

Tamil Nadu: Girls who get underpaid and remain trainees in the garment factories in Tamil Nadu are being rescued through the recent amendments in the Apprenticeship Act.

International news

India and Sweden entered into a memorandum of understanding that will facilitate mobility of trained personnel from India to Sweden, thus giving a boost to Skill India Mission.

As per the meeting held with a delegation led by the British Deputy High Commissioner at Chandigarh, UK will set up skill development centres in Punjab, for training and placement of Punjabi youth for overseas employment.

As per the recent meeting between Mr. Rajiv Pratap Rudy and Karen Andrews, the Australian Assistant Minister for Vocational Education and Skills, India and Australia discussed about strengthen bilateral cooperation in skill development
