The first half of June saw important decisions and positive news that could benefit several ITI students. The ITI graduates will have a formal convocation and they will be considered on par with Class XII pass-outs and will be eligible for taking any course in higher education to match their aspirations. And, soon NSQF will be backed up by law to align with higher education through flexible options. The other news that grabbed the headline was the NSDC announcement about the appointment of Mr. Manish Kumar as MD and CEO and Mr. Jayant Krishna as ED and COO.   • Arunachal Pradesh: Skill development training under BADP and PMKVY concludes at Rajiv Gandhi government polytechnic.
  • Assam: Government announces the formation of a Skill Development Department in the State, with the aim of enhancing the employability levels of youth.
  • Delhi: Wadhwani Foundation partners with Delhi government to transform ITIs
  • Gujarat: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and the IIMTS has begun a drive to enhance skills by training more than 2000 Anganwadi workers.
  • Jammu and Kashmir: 1. Tata Motors and the Indian Army have come together for training of youth as automobile service technicians. 2.The chief minister emphasized on the need to develop local skills for developing traditional crafts as a means of livelihood.
  • Jharkhand: Nearly one lakh youth have been trained in Jharkhand under the Skill India Mission in the past one year.
  • Karnataka: AICTE has decided to organize a workshop on PMKVY to create awareness about the scheme in technical institutions across the country.
  • Odisha: 1. An Advanced Training Institute (ATI) will be set up in Bhubaneswar to train youth in various sectors such as civil architectural design, heat ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), interior design, mining and mineral processing, tourism and hospitality besides traditional trades like fitter, electricians, plumbers, and welders. 2. The Panchayati Raj Department of Odisha gets an international award for ensuring skill development of rural youth from Europe India Foundation for Excellence.
  • Punjab: Jalandhar to have first skill development center to provide free training to 1,491 urban poor students under NULM scheme in collaboration with AISECT.
  • Rajasthan: Singapore’s technical institute, ITEES to set up vocational training centres in India after conducting an onsite analysis of skilled human resources in few industry sectors. The aim is to set up two model Skills Centre in Delhi and Varanasi.
  • Tamil Nadu: 1. Knit wear industry in Tirupur insists on skill development programs for upskilling existing workforce by recognizing their prior skills.2. Residents of villages around Kamarajar Port to get skill based training under the CSR initiatives for local fishermen. The training will be provided by MRF Institute of Driver Development and NIMSME.
  • Telangana: TalentSprint has started a variety of new programs to equip the youth of the rural areas to compete equally with urban aspirants of the IT sector.
  • Uttarakhand: National Forest Skill Development Centre has been set up to provide youth with jobs in the forest sector and reduce migration of people from the hills in search of work.

News from the industry sectors

  • Automobile: Hyundai embarks on collaborative skill development programs with 25 ITIs .
  • This expansion of Hyundai’s association with 25 ITIs comes after a successful completion of a pilot program that Hyundai launched in 2012 across 5 locations.
  • Tata Motors today entered into a partnership with Automotive Skill Development Council (ASDC) for a collaborative skill development program. The company’s skill centers will comply with competency levels of the NSQF.
  • Aviation: Airport Authority of India (AAI), NSDC and National Skill Development Fund (NSDF) signed a Tripartite MoU where AAI has committed to contribute an amount of 5.25 crore of its CSR funds to NSDF along with land and premises for setting up skill development centers in the country for scaling up training in the aviation sector.
  • Apparel: In a first collaboration between ATDC and AMHSSC, an orientation, assessment and certification program was conducted for master trainers. One of the key points pertains to the role of ATDC TOT (training of trainers) to conduct RPL for various implementing agencies.
  • Hydrocarbon Skill Sector Council (HSSC): More than 19 lakh people will be trained over the next 10 years in the oil and gas sector to cater to the rising skill needs of the future as the industry expands in a growing economy.

 News from the central government and NSDC

  • Under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, the first meeting of governing council of National Skill Development Mission was held. Here’s a quick summary of the points compiled by Team NSN.
  • India and Qatar have signed an agreement to facilitate workforce mobility, skill development and placement of youth in overseas jobs in Qatar.
  • Centre for Disability Studies will conduct free training classes for people with disabilities.
  • There have been discussions about following the Swiss model of skill development, following the Prime Minister’s discussions with Swiss officials.
  •  An initial version of LMIS website, developed by NSDA has become functional to connect skilled workers with employers.
  • According to an RTI application filed by HT, NSDC has been able to identify only 5% candidates who got placed after being trained under the PMKVY. This means out of 17.07 lakh students, a mere 82,183 got jobs since the scheme was launched a year ago.
  • NSDC plans to mobilise Rs 200 crore by tapping corporates CSR funds for skill development initiatives.
