The FICCI Global Skills Summit is the highlight of the fortnight with a day-long presentations and deliberation of a host of issues related to ‘skilling for the future’. We have prepared a summary of points and here’s the link to view it. The fortnight saw many other positive development with regard to skilling and education with news from the states, the government and the industry. Apprenticeship continues to gain our attention being in the headlines for the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme.   • Assam: 1.To fast track skill development initiatives two centres have been set up. Courses run here are all aligned to the National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) 2. The Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Member of Parliament decided that MSDE will ensure two Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendras (PMKK) in Mangaldoi and Udalguri district of the State, to further enhance skill development initiatives for the youth there. 3. Awards given away for Hair and Beauty sector that celebrates women empowerment in various fields.
  • Delhi: Uber and Maruti Suzuki India partnered to train 30,000 drivers and aim to create one million livelihood opportunities.
  • Gujarat: 1. The English improvement program jointly conducted by the government focusses on skill development through English improvement and covered activities such as making profiles, psychometric tests, vision boards, celebrity interviews, making advertisement etc. 2. Students from rural districts were chosen and provided training in through a skill training module.
  • Jharkhand: With the objective of formulating an integrated approach to transform the skill development landscape, ASSOCHAM India organized the Summit cum Awards on Skilling India which highlighted the importance of skilling people and that very few people have any kind of vocational training.
  • Karnataka: The government has partnered with Vishwa Konkani Stree Shakti Mission (VKSSM) to train women from Konkani speaking communities in various vocational and service areas. Training is mainly to enrich their knowledge in soft skills, computers and competitive vocation and also training ladies and girls for sewing leading to tailoring and fashion designing.
  • Maharashtra: 1. The government is planning to set up India’s first Central Institutes of Chemical Engineering and Technology at different locations where the chemical industry has significant presence. The industry which employs nearly 2 million people requires 8.5 lakh skilled technicians to impart skill training. 2. Thomas Cook Centre for Learning celebrated its convocation and awarded students who have completed courses in world tourism and management.
  • Odisha: Memorandum signed between ITI and India Rare Earths Limited to impart skill training to students. The students will be placed in to internships and the government would provide Rs.1500 per member to the industry.
  • Punjab: A five-day vocational training programme on “Mushroom Cultivation and Processing” was conducted by Punjab Agricultural University’s Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangru. The participants were also informed about the subsidy and credit schemes.
  • Tamil Nadu: 1. Skill Development centre inaugurated at Agricultural Engineering College and Research Institute The centre would impart training to the rural youth on repair and maintenance of farm machinery, implements, tractors and agricultural motors. 2. MSME-DI to conduct a workshop on skill training where ten topics will be covered which will be on listening, questioning, skill, coaching, motivation, teamwork etc. 3. MoU signed between Quess Corp and National Employability Enhancement Mission (NEEM) to train youth in multiple technical programs.
  • Telangana: 1. Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy has inaugurated the Telangana Jagruthi Skill Development programme the idea is to bring as many youth into the employable sector as possible. 2. New Skill development Initiative “GROW” started by Dr. Reddy’s for disabled people which focusses on personal growth and right job placement.

News from the central government

  • Union government decides to provide Rs 32,000 crore for skill development in the next three years and another 12 crore for the National Apprenticeship Scheme.
  • Government has announced the introduction of a National Apprenticeship Promotion scheme for the skill development of apprentices in India. For the successful implementation, the government has earmarked Rs. 10,000 crore for the scheme.
  • To train 40 crore youth by 2022, India needs 10 lakh teachers per year. Vocational skills is the one solution that everyone agrees to for solving many of our problems like skill deficit, slow economic growth, low enterprise productivity, poor workforce efficiency, career development, life satisfaction and even crime reduction.
  • AICTE amends regulations and allows engineering colleges to offer vocational courses and industrial training.
  • MoU signed between CRPF and MSDE to train retired CRPS personnel and wards and their families in the fields of apparel making, beauty, automobile and food processing.
  • India and Egypt aim to work together in fields of Health, Skill development and Agriculture.

News from the industry sectors

  • Aviation: The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship has set up the Aerospace & Aviation Sector Skill Council (AASSC) with leading corporates to develop both domestic and transnational standards and capacity for training delivery in various areas of the sector.
  • Automobile: Automotive Skills Development Council (ASDC) signed agreements with four different entities (ACMA, SIAM, FADA and NSDC) for enhancing its capacity and capabilities in providing learning modules and meet global standards.
  • Health Care: MBA program designed for students interested in Health care management studies. Placements will be provided to students in corporate hospitals, nursing homes and pharmaceutical companies.
  • Microsoft and Orient Green partner to provide language learning and soft skill training to rural youth in the country.
  • “StartInCollege” program launched in FICCI summit that aims to provide training and global exposure to entrepreneurial students.
