Union Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan launched Skill India Digital platform to enable skilling for all

The Union Minister for Education and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, launched Skill India Digital (SID), a comprehensive digital platform, on September 13, 2023. This initiative aims to synergize and transform India’s skills, education, employment, and entrepreneurship landscape, ensuring every Indian has access to quality skill development, relevant opportunities, and entrepreneurial support.

The platform embodies the aspirations and dreams of millions of Indians who seek better opportunities and a brighter future as it extends industry-relevant skill courses, job opportunities, and entrepreneurship support. The event was also graced by Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship & Electronics, IT.

SID is the Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) that underpins India’s skilling, education, employment, and entrepreneurship ecosystem. Its driving force is to bring innovation, accessibility, and personalization to skill development, specifically focusing on digital technology and Industry 4.0 skills. This innovative platform represents a significant leap in expediting hiring skilled talent, fostering continuous learning, and promoting career advancement.

In line with the G20 framework’s vision for establishing DPI and promoting digital skills and literacy in the digital economy, SID aligns seamlessly. Furthermore, it is a comprehensive information hub for all government-led skilling and entrepreneurship initiatives. It is a primary resource for citizens seeking career growth and lifelong learning opportunities.

Speaking on the launch, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan said, “Skill India Digital is a state-of-the-art platform to bring all skilling initiatives together.” He said, “The consensus on India’s advocacy for global digital public infrastructure and addressing skills gaps was the centrepiece of India’s successful G20 Presidency. Taking another leap towards creating digital public infrastructure, MSDE has created an open-source platform to address the skilling needs of India’s diverse demography.” He added that Skill India Digital is another step towards harnessing our demographic dividend and establishing India as a global skills hub. A revolution in learning and skill development, Skill India Digital will enable skilling for all, anywhere, anytime, he added.

Union Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan launched Skill India Digital platform to enable skilling for all

A few days after the successful G20 summit, Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar highlighted that one of the most significant agreements was related to Digital Public Infrastructures (DPIs). Skill India Digital undoubtedly stands out as one of the most crucial DPIs, particularly for the youth, as it lies at the intersection of two pivotal components of the Prime Minister’s vision for New India: Skill India and Digital India.

These are robust initiatives with a singular aim: equipping the youth with relevant skills for the future, ultimately generating many opportunities. In the post-COVID era, there’s heightened awareness about the importance of digital skills. Skill India Digital is poised to facilitate entrepreneurship and create a well-prepared workforce for the future.

The following elements will enhance the SID platform and provide numerous benefits:

  1. Aadhaar/AI-based Facial Authentication
  2. Digital Verifiable Credentials (DVC)
  3. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) Recommendations
  4. Aadhaar-based eKYC
  5. Digital Learning
  6. Citizen-Centric Approach
  7. Mobile-First Approach
  8. Scale and Speed
  9. Security Measures
  10. Interoperability
  11. WhatsApp Chatbot
  12. Ease of Doing Business

Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar interacted with the technology team actively involved in building the Skill India Digital platform, which has been made to accelerate transformation and empowerment in the country. Each section of the platform meets diverse citizen needs.

Skill India Digital started its journey with a commitment to being user-friendly. It aims to remove existing obstacles by offering an easy-to-use interface adaptable to various devices. This ensures that people from diverse backgrounds can access the platform effortlessly, regardless of the technology they have. In a country with many languages, Skill India Digital is bridging the gaps by supporting multiple Indian Languages, fostering inclusivity and a diverse learning environment for all the users. A significant breakthrough for secure access came with Aadhaar-based eKYC. This robust verification process is the foundation of Skill India Digital, ensuring only genuine participants benefit from its offerings.

The platform’s mobile-first approach adapted to the modern era’s reliance on smartphones, ensuring uninterrupted learning experiences through handheld devices, transforming traditional learning methods and allowing users to engage with the platform’s resources anytime and anywhere.

In the current digital landscape, Skill India Digital has pioneered a ground-breaking approach to showcasing an individual’s skills and qualifications. This innovation comes in Digitally Verified Credentials, a crucial component that fundamentally transforms how qualifications are exhibited and recognized. Skill India Digital has harnessed the power of digital technology to offer a secure, tamper-proof, and verifiable solution. At its core, the Digitally Verified Credential empowers users to confidently present their qualifications, experiences and certifications in a digital format with an inherent authenticity layer.

Skill India Digital has extended this transformative concept by introducing Digital CVs via personalized QR Codes. With a simple scan, potential employers or partners can access a digital portfolio summarizing an individual’s skills, qualifications, experiences, and achievements. In Skill India Digital (SID), the integration of timely updates has evolved into an indispensable aspect of users’ experiences. One of Skill India Digital’s key strengths lies in its comprehensive training and skill development approach. The platform is designed to encompass all training programs initiated by both Central and State governments and various departments. The platform endeavours to create a unified and centralized hub for skill development initiatives by integrating government training programs into Skill India Digital. This approach is rooted in recognising that various government entities actively foster skill enhancement across diverse sectors and regions.

Implementing these features within a Skill India Digital skilling platform will revolutionize the skilling landscape in India, offering enhanced accessibility, personalized learning experiences, streamlined verification processes, and improved career guidance. It will enable learners to acquire relevant skills, stay updated with industry trends, and effectively contribute to India’s workforce development.

During the event, several Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) were exchanged with leading organizations to advance digital skilling, foster industry participation, and enhance learner engagement, including AICTE, CBSE, NIELIT, Infosys, Microsoft, AWS (Amazon), RedHat, Wadhwani Foundation, UNICEF, Future Skills Prime, SAP, Tech Mahindra Foundation.
