Growing demand for skilled professionals in the Beauty Sector

“India’s artistic talent is in high demand globally, particularly in the beauty sector, reflecting a growing trend of skilled professionals sought after for international opportunities,” says Mr. Dinesh Sood, Managing Director, Orane International.

To learn more about the growing demand for skilled professionals in the Beauty Sector, industry participation in the beauty industry, career and entrepreneurship opportunities in this sector and more, we spoke with Mr. Dinesh Sood, Managing Director, Orane International.

Below are a few excerpts from our conversation. You can watch the full video on our YouTube channel.

Q. What do you think about the growing beauty sector and its demand for skilled professionals? How is technology impacting this industry?

A. The beauty sector is experiencing remarkable growth. Our journey began in 2009, and we now have 121 centers across India and 2 in Canada. What’s fascinating is the evolving trend among our students. Previously, our demography mainly comprised individuals who couldn’t secure college admissions or were college dropouts, and even homemakers. However, this landscape is rapidly changing. Thanks to the concerted efforts of industry stakeholders and the transformative power of technology, the sector is witnessing a surge in demand for skilled professionals. People are increasingly inclined towards looking and feeling their best, and this shift has elevated the status of beautician experts significantly.

Q. What are your views on graduates entering beauty courses out of personal interest, and the increasing presence of young men in the industry?

A. The shift in trends is noticeable, with young men increasingly participating in beauty training. This isn’t just about money; it’s about fame and the opportunity to start businesses with minimal investment, elevating them to the status of celebrities. With the proliferation of TV and mobile channels, makeup artists are in high demand. Even celebrities have to schedule around their availability. What’s remarkable is the diverse backgrounds of those entering the field, including top students from English medium schools and even former medical students. This shift is partly due to encouragement from the Government of India, which has transformed perceptions of the beauty industry from something to be shy about to a source of pride. Fathers who once sought traditional matches for their daughters are now proud to have makeup artists and hairstylists as sons-in-law. This cultural shift is palpable.

Q. Please share your thoughts on integrating vocational subjects into the school curriculum, as outlined in the NEP 2020? Do you believe we are prepared for the practical training aspect?

A. It’s crucial to integrate skills training into schools, and recently, we’ve partnered with the government of India for this purpose. The key lies in how we deliver this training – the quality of trainers, curriculum, infrastructure, and the inspiration it instills in students. This shift can transform the landscape, enabling students to explore and develop their skills from an early age. Starting at grade ten or eleven allows them to pursue their passions and excel at a younger age than those who begin later. It’s a significant initiative that promises to revolutionize the skill industry.

Growing demand for skilled professionals in the Beauty Sector

Q. Do you think we are receiving adequate participation from the industry for such programs?

A. Yes, there’s definitely participation from the industry. With giants like Reliance and Tata entering the beauty field, including products and salons, training becomes paramount. While the industry is hands-on, we’re exploring online training to supplement practical learning. Big players, both international and local, are stepping in to meet the enormous demand. In fact, we’ve identified over 27 different job roles in beauty and wellness. Looking at global trends, countries like China are setting the bar high, with demand far exceeding our current capacity. This indicates a massive and growing market for beauty services.

Q. Could professionals from India trained in the beauty sector find opportunities to work abroad? Please share your thoughts.

A. There’s a vast opportunity for Indian beauty professionals outside of India, especially in countries like Canada, where there’s a significant Indian population. They seek skilled artists for various occasions, including weddings. Additionally, nearby Asian countries and cruise ships also require skilled individuals in this industry. As for CIDESCO, it’s a prestigious international certification body based in Zurich. We’ve tailored specific curriculums for the Indian market, such as courses on nutrition and Indian bridal makeup, to meet regional demands. This initiative has raised awareness among students and enhanced opportunities in the industry.
