Soaring through the skies and transforming industries, drones have taken the world by storm. In India, the drone industry is witnessing exponential growth, becoming an indispensable part of sectors ranging from agriculture and surveillance to delivery services and disaster management. As the nation embraces this revolutionary technology, it becomes clear that the true potential of drones lies not just in their hardware and software, but in the fusion of knowledge and skills from various fields. The industry is in dire need of drone professionals trained in multidisciplinary skills.

In this article, we will explore three ways to make drone training multidisciplinary. This will help us in appreciating the need for multidisciplinary approach to skill development in the backdrop to unlock the drone sector’s true potential.

Can multidisciplinary skills address the complex challenges of India’s drone industry?

Despite its promising trajectory, the Indian drone industry faces several challenges, including a heavy reliance on imported parts, limited exposure to design aspects, and a shortage of technical expertise. To achieve sustainable success, we must embrace the concept of “Make in India” and take it further with “Design in India.” This approach will lead to the development of indigenous drones tailored to India’s unique needs and applications, fostering innovation and self-reliance.

Take agriculture applications, for example, representing a significant opportunity for drones. Payloads such as cameras, multispectral sensors, thermal cameras, and spraying tanks are vital for precision agriculture. By focusing on the development of these payloads, India can revolutionize its agriculture sector, enhancing crop yields and sustainable practices.

In the ever-evolving landscape of the drone industry, a future-ready workforce equipped with the right skills is the key to unlocking its true potential. To tackle the complexities at hand, the workforce of tomorrow must possess a diverse range of skill sets.

The demand for multidisciplinary skills has become more pronounced than ever before. As the industry continues to grow and diversify, professionals who can seamlessly blend expertise from various fields will be the ones spearheading innovation and driving the drone revolution forward.

3 Key Strategies for Embracing Multidisciplinary Learning in Drone Training

  • Integration of diverse disciplines: Drone technology is a convergence of various fields, such as Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical and Aeronautical Sciences, AI, Software Programming, GIS, and Material Science. To understand and adapt to these technologies, drone labs and courses must incorporate aspects from all relevant disciplines. This integration will ensure that aspiring drone professionals gain a holistic understanding, making them competent in handling complex challenges.
  • Emphasize the importance of every role and focus on their skill development: In the drone industry, every job role is equally significant. While pilots are essential for operating drones, technicians play a crucial role in the drone ecosystem’s backbone. Technicians are responsible for maintenance, repair, and safety assurance. Their tasks include propeller repair, landing gear maintenance, motor servicing, and battery upkeep. Additionally, they need skills in calibrating drone sensors, configuring payloads, and ensuring proper communication between drones and their ground control stations. Recognizing the importance of each role will create a workforce that collaborates seamlessly to achieve success.
  • Practical hands-on experience: A multidisciplinary approach requires hands-on experience with diverse technologies. Drone training programs should prioritize practical training in various aspects, enabling participants to work with real drone components and technologies. Practical exposure enhances problem-solving abilities and encourages creative solutions to industry-specific challenges.

The need for industry-relevant skill development in drones

To maximize the effectiveness of the multidisciplinary approach, a well-defined skill development strategy is essential to equip students with industry-relevant proficiencies. In fostering indigenous design and innovation while propelling industry growth, skilling programs should incorporate design elements. Students must gain exposure to Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software and 3D printers for rapid prototyping of drone components.

They should also learn Electronic Circuit Simulation and PCB prototyping to design and manufacture drone systems. Additionally, knowledge of semiconductor design, sensors, and sensor packaging will be crucial in creating cutting-edge drone technologies. These diverse skill sets will empower students to embrace the multidisciplinary nature of the drone industry, driving innovation and progress within the field.

When it comes to multidisciplinary skill development, Scientech’s drone lab solution is a prime example of an integrated and comprehensive approach to drone education. It covers a wide range of topics, including electronics basics, flight physics, motor and battery characteristics, sensor applications, mechanical design, and 3D printing. Additionally, you gain hands-on experience with flight simulation software and the integration of payloads such as cameras and LIDAR for data collection. This holistic approach builds your confidence as a drone technician and equips you to collaborate effectively with domain-specific engineers, pilots, and end-users.

The drone industry is a promising frontier with vast potential for growth and innovation. To establish India as a leader in this space, a multidisciplinary approach is imperative. Skilling programs and drone labs should expose students to various technologies, fostering a culture of design and innovation. Embracing indigenous design and manufacturing will lead to self-reliance, cost-effectiveness, and safety assurance. With the right skillset and vision, India can shape the future of drones and unlock unprecedented possibilities across industries.
