Skill Development and Entrepreneurship opportunities in Haryana

If you have visited the Industrial exhibition held every year in Hyderabad, you must have spotted Panipat stalls of bed sheets, blankets etc., And that’s how I got to know about the Textile industry in Panipat, Haryana. Along with Textile industry, the state also focuses on the Automobile and Light engineering and Horticulture. Haryana is the destination for auto component manufacturers as it is host to many large automotive players. Apart from Automobiles, Agriculture is one of the biggest employment generators in rural Haryana.

There are other industries that provide skill development initiatives to prepare youth for employment and entrepreneurship.

Major industries in Haryana

  1. Automobile and Light Engineering
  2. IT and ESDM
  3. Renewable Energy
  4. Textiles
  5. Agro-based, food processing and allied industries
  6. Horticulture
  7. Leather industry
  8. Handloom and garments manufacturing
  9. Waste processing and recycling industry

Major industries in Haryana

Automobile and Light Engineering 

Haryana has around 20% of the workforce in the automobile industry. It produces half of the passenger cars and two-wheelers in the country. The state will continue to give priority to this sector for meeting its requirements as new entrepreneurs.

Haryana is –

  • World’s largest tractor manufacturer
  • Second largest bus manufacturer
  • Fourth largest car manufacturer

Skills required for this industry are

  1. Analytical and problem-solving skills
  2. Knowledge of machine design, manufacturing processes and mechanical systems
  3. Understanding of electrical systems
  4. Knowledge of digital circuits and interfacing with mechanical/electromechanical system

IT and ESDM (Electronics System Design and Manufacturing) 

IT sector in Haryana adds 9.4% to its GDP and 54% to exports. BPO hub employs people from Haryana in the IT sector with a worldwide range of 5%. The Department of Information Technology Electronics and Communication, Haryana (DITECH) is providing internet-based technologies for citizens to make easier tech-based employment. The IT sector includes cybersecurity, information integrity, IT Accessibility and more which people can be employed in.

Skills required for this industry are

  1. Data Analysis
  2. Cloud Computing
  3. Machine Learning
  4. DevOps

Renewable Energy

Haryana is one of the few states in India to achieve 100% rural electricity. It aims to provide more than 4000 MW of solar power projects with the target of 1.6 GW of solar rooftop capacity.

Skills required for this industry are

  1. Knowledge on electricity voltage or levels in the state
  2. Quality management
  3. Someone who needs to maintain the Renewable Energy Products

Textiles 

Haryana is the fourth largest producer of cotton in the country. The Haryana state industrial development corporation has developed a Textile Park at Barhi. The state contributes over 6% of total cotton production in the country.

The textile sector employs approximately one million people through which three billion dollars’ worth is being exported from the state in a year.

Skills required for this industry are

  1. Technical skills for operators
  2. Spun and weaving knowledge to produce the final product

Horticulture

The cultivation of horticulture crops is highly specialized in the state. The Horticulture development has greater importance in recent years as this sector was identified as profit for diversification of land use which provides increased employment opportunities.

Saina Nehwal Institute of Agricultural Technology, Training and Education of Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, (HAU) Hisar recently organised online vocational training for mushroom production.

Skills required for this industry are

  1. Plant mechanics
  2. Complete knowledge on plants and soil
  3. Fertilizing
  4. Qualitative skills

Agro-based, food processing and allied industries

Haryana is an agrarian state with abundant fertile land. The Haryana State Industrial Development Corporation has allotted 100 acres of land at Sonipat for the establishment of the National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM) to facilitate capacity building and needs of skill development for the sector.

To promote start-ups in agri-business in Haryana and increase the income of farmers, the government started implementing Food processing policy in 2018.

Skills required for this industry are

  1. Knowledge on quantitative and qualitative analysis
  2. Consistent enhancement of quality products
  3. Operating system knowledge
  4. Maintenance of cold storages in Food Processing Units

Handicrafts industry 

Haryana art depicts the rich cultural heritage of the state. Handicrafts of Haryana include Pottery, Embroidery, Phulkari, Chope, Durries Bagh and Painting. The state is mainly famous for its hand-woven shawls and pots which are brightly painted and designed.

Pottery in Haryana is one of the unique features of earthenware that involves a collective effort of people. The Phulkari is done by the women population in Haryana which helps them become financially independent. Theatre is also one of the cultural arts in Haryana which is locally known as Swang.

The Haryana Government has notified the “Handicraft Awards Scheme” for giving awards to artisans, craft persons and weavers of the State for the promotion of handicrafts and related activities.

  • Surajkund International Crafts Mela – This mela showcases the diversity of regional and international handicrafts and traditions every year. The mela brings together diverse heritage crafts made with traditional skills that are fading away due to cheap machine-made imitations.

Skills required for this industry are

  1. Marketing
  2. Designing
  3. Pottery knowledge
  4. High-Level technical skills
  5. Expertise in operating machines

Haryana also has few unique industries such as

  • Waste processing and recycling industry – Haryana promotes the processing of waste materials like hazardous waste, urban solid waste, medical waste etc., and recycle them.
  • Footwear and accessories – Haryana produce leather and has footwear-making clusters. There is a demand for manpower in this industry, so, Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) is being set up at IMT Rohtak.

Unique information on Haryana

  • IGRUA, Drone Destination sign pact with Haryana for drone training – Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi (IGRUA) and Drone Destination have jointly signed an initial pact with the Haryana Government’s initiative DRIISHYA to commence drone training in Haryana.
  • Haryana government felicitates ITI passed outs – The Haryana Government felicitated the youth who have become entrepreneurs after passing ITI courses from government and private Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs). The objective of this scheme is to encourage self-employment.
  • Rural Development Department – The Directorate of Rural Development Department plays a major role in the socio-economic growth of the State by implementing various schemes for the upliftment of the rural people.
  • ITI in Haryana – Haryana is imparting skill-based training to the unemployed youth of the state through the network of 166 Government Industrial Training Institutes (133 (Co-Ed.) GITIs and 33 GITIs for Women) and 242 Private ITIs under Craftsman Training Scheme.
  • Herbal Park in Gurugram – To educate people about the traditional Indian system of medicine for creating awareness, preserving gene pool and production of quality seeds.
  • Maruti Suzuki to start the third plant in Haryana – Maruti Suzuki already has two manufacturing facilities in Haryana and now setting up its third plant here.
  • Panipat – Textiles and export promotion – The city is globally known as the ‘Textile city’ which has 30,000 small and big units.
