Gone are the times, when text-book teaching and mugging up were essential for high scores, and subsequently, better career choices and employment opportunities. Teaching and training have, thankfully, undergone a paradigm shift for the better. The process of discovery and re-discovery, unlearning and re-learning, and constant change are never-ending, be it in any domain of life. In the field of education and training, this has facilitated the application of out-of-the-box methodologies, tools and techniques. Organizations are striving to consistently update their training processes, in order to meet the expectations of the dynamic job market.

IL&FS Skills, in its endeavour to address the manpower demand-supply gap offers industry-endorsed and technology-driven skill-training modules for various learner segments. A learner-centric approach ensures an amalgamation of technology and practical application of the learnt curricula, enhancing the employability quotient and employment opportunities, in order to ensure a smooth transition from the classroom to the workplace.

The Knowledge Vehicle or K-Yan from IL&FS

The role of digitalization in today’s world is evident. IL&FS Skills applies its Digital Learning Resources with the aim of standardizing training, and increasing trainee interest. One such innovation is K-Yan or the Knowledge Vehicle, which combines the functionality of multiple devices into a compact unit; for example it comes fully loaded with a high-end computing system integrated with a projector, audio, and inbuilt virtual interactivity. It’s portable design and easy-to-use features make it extremely user friendly, irrespective of the environment.

Mr. R.C.M. Reddy, Managing Director and C.E.O, IL&FS Education and Skills elaborates: “The USPs of the K-Yan ensure that it can convert any room into an interactive classroom, which is vital where infrastructure is minimum. Besides this, it can connect with multiple hand-held devices over a wireless network and act as a local cloud/server in a low connectivity environment. In addition, the device is low on maintenance, easy to set-up and use, robust, and equipped with the latest technologies. The idea is to transform any basic classroom into a fun-filled, quality learning experience, using the latest technologies; this is important to enhance the motivation and participation of all stakeholders.”

An all-inclusive solution: K-Skills from IL&FS

K-Skills (Knowledge Skills) include K-Yan, multimedia content and print content. Available for 60 trades from 23 key industry sectors, the multimedia content is delivered in English, Hindi and 8 regional languages. The content for vocational skills training is NOS aligned and mapped to NSQF, enriched by giving additional information and interesting facts in a manner, which makes understanding of difficult concepts fun, and leads to quality learning with improved learning outcomes. During training, it is ensured that all related details like the number of trainees mobilized, trained, assessed, certified, placed and post placement support provided are uploaded on Management Information System (MIS).

Talking about the challenges faced Ketul Acharya, C.O.O. and Group Head – Skills Initiatives, IL&FS Skills Development Corporation Ltd. says: “In remote areas and backward regions, students are not comfortable using technology-driven training content, and face challenges in understanding the use of technology. Our experienced subject matter experts (SMEs) and instructional designers (IDs), supported by academicians and trainers, make the students feel comfortable and at ease with the use of technology. Every student is helped in adapting and understanding the technology driven content. This is crucial for the technology and content to be accepted, utilized, and benefitted from. Another challenge faced is the efficient conduction of examinations, especially since training centers are based in rural and remote areas; so, instead of physical copies, online examinations have been introduced. Productive placement, post training, is another important aspect; we work with companies across Tier I, II and III cities. However, it is challenging for companies to travel to remote locations for interviews and interaction with the students. IL&FS uses audio-visual devices to facilitate interviews and sessions of candidates with potential employers ensuring a win-win situation for both sides.”

Adherence to high standards of quality

“Quality is not an act; it is a habit.” – Aristotle

An independent quality group ensures compliance to standards and procedures to increase replicability. The quality group defines the quality objectives on a continuous basis, monitors and enhances the processes, and maintains documentation of standards and guidelines. The IL&FS Skills Multimedia Content Team has also obtained an ISO 9001:2000 certification for design and development of multimedia content.

Mr. Reddy adds: “Quality assurance is indispensable in our domains of work because we understand the importance of it while dealing with the careers and development of individuals. We develop programmes for all learners i.e. people between the working age group of 18 – 35 years can enrol for our programmes. Our vocational learning content caters to everyone who is desirous of acquiring a skill, upskilling, and even for school children. IL&FS Skills adheres to high quality assurance benchmarks during the content development process. Stringent guidelines and checklists are used to ensure quality lessons or products. The production cycle is reviewed and updated at three levels: self-review, peer review and product testing respectively. Through our robust content, designed in close coordination with the concerned industries, and our close linkages with small and medium enterprises, in particular, we are able to generate sustainable livelihoods for the local youth. Our skills content development model draws strength from the integration of technology, innovation, interactivity and industry relevance.”
