Why Practical Training is Essential for Building a Productive, Job-Ready Workforce

Time to productivity is an important HR metric for measuring the time it takes for employees to become productive in their respective job roles. One of the key factors that affects time to productivity is the competency levels – knowledge, skills and abilities. Skill sets that can be acquired through practical training are crucial for performing the tasks independently or in teams.

Today every industry sector expects employees to be productive from day one! This being the norm, how do we ensure industry-aligned hands-on training through real-world  work scenarios? What about the training tools and equipment that match industry standards? 

On-the-job productivity and performance efficiency are closely linked to real-life exposure, and this plays an important role in boosting employee confidence and contributing to consistent delivery.

Competence, confidence and consistent performance through practical skill training

While productivity and efficiency are directly proportionate to the competency levels, it would be helpful to analyse the traits of competent workers—how do they break down the task and make the right use of tools and technology to achieve the right results? This also depends on how skilled they are in terms of being hands-on; were they trained in the latest technology and processes?

Competency is closely related to the time spent learning hands-on, honing skills, improving oneself based on feedback, and acquiring a deeper understanding of the job role and the industry. Employees who are competent exude confidence and are result oriented. And their self-belief is integral to achieving the performance outcomes and business goals.

Practical learning is not only indispensable but also highly valuable in making skill-based and vocational education work at any level of NSQF, India’s competency-based framework. How do we make it work? What are the ways to ensure students get exposed to hands-on learning? How do we integrate technology and make practical training accessible and effective?

Importance of National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) in practical training

The National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) is instrumental in achieving competency and proficiency by ensuring demand-driven practical training.  By aligning the training curriculum to a competency level, we can strive for achieving the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform a job.

At the same time, application of knowledge and skills to perform a task demonstrates the proficiency or mastery of required skills. In other words, NSQF levels provide an enabling framework to enhance productivity at various levels of any job role through practical, hands-on training that addresses the skill gaps between academic knowledge and workplace skills.

Benefits of practical training in various industries

In today’s fast-changing job market, practical training is vital for preparing students with the skills they need to succeed in specific industries. Technology is changing rapidly, reshaping fields like electric vehicles (EVs), solar energy, logistics, healthcare, and telecom. New tools and methods are being introduced constantly, making it crucial for individuals to stay updated. Practical training helps students gain hands-on experience with the latest technologies and processes, ensuring they are ready to meet the challenges of these evolving industries. Let’s explore the tangible benefits of practical training in these sectors.

1. Electric Vehicle (EV) industry

The Electric Vehicle (EV) industry is at the forefront of technological innovation, incorporating advanced systems such as battery management, electric motors, and regenerative braking.

  • Hands-on experience: Practical training allows students to engage directly with these technologies, fostering an in-depth understanding of system integration and troubleshooting.
  • Battery management systems (BMS): With EVs relying on complex lithium-ion batteries, hands-on experience in monitoring and managing BMS is crucial for ensuring safety and efficiency.
  • Electric powertrain mechanics: Unlike traditional combustion engines, electric powertrains require a unique skill set. Practical training in assembly and repair equips students to meet the challenges of servicing EVs.

To effectively implement these methods, educational institutions must invest in high-quality, state-of-the-art lab equipment. Here’s a detailed breakdown of a few very crucial types of practical learning commonly used in these courses.

Hands-on skill-based learning: Hands-on learning involves physically engaging with tools, machinery, equipment, or other industry-specific resources in real-world settings. This method often includes competency-based training, where learners practice specific, measurable skills to achieve industry-accepted levels of competence. These skills are typically divided into smaller, manageable tasks to facilitate mastery.

For example, in automotive repairs, students may focus on becoming proficient in specific skills like tire replacement, oil changes, or engine diagnostics before advancing to more complex tasks. Similarly, in welding programs, students master techniques such as MIG or TIG welding on different materials to meet industry certification standards.

Hands-on learning is also prominent in fields like healthcare, where nursing students learn to administer injections or perform first aid on medical dummies. This foundational training prepares them to apply these skills to real patients in clinical settings, ensuring they are competent and confident in their abilities.

In immersive learning environments, learners interact with virtual objects or scenarios to practice skills that would otherwise be too risky, expensive, or difficult to replicate in real life.

Project-based learning: Project-based learning involves working on specific projects that simulate real-world tasks or industry problems. This method is often completed over a set period with clear deliverables, allowing students to apply their knowledge in practical settings.

For example, in the field of solar energy, students may engage in projects that require them to design and install solar energy systems. This process includes analyzing energy requirements, selecting appropriate equipment, and assessing costs. In the culinary arts, trainees may be tasked with creating a full-course meal, planning everything from menu design to sourcing ingredients and executing the meal in a professional kitchen. These projects cultivate a sense of ownership and responsibility in learners, preparing them for industry expectations.

Workplace-based learning (Internships/Apprenticeships): Workplace-based learning allows learners to gain practical skills by working in real-world job environments under the guidance of experienced professionals. This hands-on experience often involves direct involvement in daily tasks.

Examples include electrical and mechanical apprenticeships, where trainees work alongside master electricians or mechanics. They learn through practical tasks such as wiring systems, maintaining machines, or troubleshooting technical faults. Field-based learning also takes place outside the classroom or lab, allowing students to engage with real environments to practice their skills directly in the field.

Collaborative learning: Collaborative learning involves students working together in groups to complete a shared project or solve complex problems, reflecting real-world teamwork in various industries. This method enhances communication skills and fosters a collaborative spirit among students.

For instance, in product design, engineering or design students may collaborate on creating a new product, from conceptualization to prototype development. This process involves market research, design, and testing. In logistics, a group of students might simulate managing a supply chain, making decisions about inventory management, transportation, and distribution strategies, while collectively solving challenges they encounter.

Each of these learning methods plays a critical role in vocational education by providing learners with diverse experiences, ensuring they are well-prepared to meet industry demands. By embracing hands-on learning, technology integration, project-based approaches, workplace-based training, and collaborative efforts, skill-based and vocational courses equip students with the practical skills necessary for success in their chosen fields.
